Open Water Swim The Nafplio Trail

Day 1: Arrive to Athens

Your flight arrives in Athens Airport where your host will be eagerly waiting to drive you straight to our hotel in Nafplio. It’s time to soothe your travel fatigue, strolling around Nafplio town or lazing at the hotel. When the sun dips low, gather with your fellow thrill-seekers for a sumptuous welcome feast at a local taverna and get briefed by your guides on the unforgettable journey ahead!

Day 2: Escape Nafplio

First day of our swimming adventure. Soon after breakfast, you will start with an acclimatisation swim  from Nafplio to the sandy shores of Karathona beach. The route is nothing short of breathtaking, with the imposing cliffs of the coastline and the unique fortress of Akronafplia lending a spectacular backdrop to our swim. We’ll enjoy a packed lunch on Karathona beach and then make our way back to Nafplio on foot, strolling along the scenic coastal pathway. To cap off the day, we’ll gather for dinner at a charming seaside taverna in Nafplio.

Day 3: The Sunken City Swim

The day commences with a hearty, sumptuous breakfast before we set out for Epidavros. Our swim today will lead us to the Sunken City, a historic Mycenean establishment that dates back to the 12th century A.D., showcasing remnants of ancient walls, infrastructures, and cobblestone streets. Post-swim, we may take a tour of the renowned ancient Epidaurus, famous for its remarkable ancient amphitheater and the archaeological site of Asclepius. To conclude the day, we will dine at the fishing harbor near Nafplio, savoring the freshly caught fish of the day.

Day 4: Crown Island Cross Swim

Commence the day with a hearty breakfast before setting off for the quaint fishing village of Tolo. Our aquatic adventure for the day features the stunning coastline and its breathtaking turquoise waters tinted by the white sands below. A short distance away, our swim leads us towards the charming Koronisi, also known as Crown Island, where we’ll pause for a rejuvenating picnic. Post-swim, consider visiting the neighboring fishing port of Vivari for a taste of local ouzo and meze. We’ll then return to our hotel in Nafplio for some well-deserved relaxation.

Day 5: Off the water – Free day

0 km 

Today is designated as an off the water day, allowing those who wish to unwind in Nafplio the freedom to explore and enjoy at their leisure. You are free to choose your own adventure in Nafplio, but rest assured, our knowledgeable guides will be on hand with top recommendations. Take a stroll through the picturesque alleys and admire the charming neoclassical buildings. For those interested in history and culture, a visit to Palamidi Castle is a must. Day 6: The Volcanic peninsula Cross Swim

Start your day with a satisfying breakfast, then gear up for an exciting journey to the volcanic peninsula of Methana near the enchanting Island of Poros. Our swimming destination today is truly extraordinary, birthed from volcanic activity that continues even today. Take a dip in one of the many sulfuric thermal springs, a perfect follow-up to our 3.5 km swim. After the swim, think about taking a detour to the nearby island of Poros to experience the authentic local island culture. Finally, we’ll head back to our Nafplio hotel for some well-earned downtime.

Day 7: Spetses Island Swim

Following breakfast, we’ll set off for the Island of Spetses, a paradise showcasing the perfect blend of pristine waters, verdant landscapes, and a vibrant social scene. As you glide through the vividly blue water, you will be treated to stunning panoramas of Spetses’ abundant greenery, a signature sight of the island. After your swim, you will explore the town of Spetses, meandering through its quaint streets and alleyways – an experience not to be missed when visiting. By late afternoon you return to Nafplio for a delectable farewell dinner and your last overnight stay.

Day 8: Departure

As we gather for our final breakfast in the beautiful Nafplio, let’s avoid farewells. Instead, let’s promise to “meet again!” We have your return transportation to Athens airport organized, guaranteeing you leave with a collection of memorable moments and an enthusiasm for more exploration! Keep in mind, every trip’s conclusion is simply the start of another adventure.

Day 1 

This journey is tailored for those who relish a blend of coastal exploration and short open-water crossings. With a variety of coastlines to explore, this adventure caters perfectly to those swimmers who enjoy immersing themselves in their environment as they glide on the water. It’s also an excellent choice for partners who may not swim. 

Participants need to have a rudimentary comprehension of swimming in the open water and should be able to manage an average daily swim distance of about 3km in a single swim. This swim journey has been categorized as ‘Easy’, which is intended for swimmers who wish to take a more laid-back approach, savor the pace, and soak in the views.

It’s a relaxed yet immersive introduction to open water swimming in Greece, perfect for swimmers who value scenery, culture, and rhythm over speed or competition.

Transportation

Start your adventure in Greece’s Peloponnese region with a warm welcome on Day 1 at Athens Airport. Our friendly host will be there to pick you up and take you to your hotel in town. And on Day 7, we’ll make sure you’re back at the airport with plenty of time for your onward flight.

If you’re arriving on Day 1 and departing on Day 7, transfers to and from the airport are included. But don’t worry if your travel dates don’t fit this schedule – just contact us for details on arranging an airport transfer outside of these days.

Athens Airport is the easiest way to get to Greece. Kalamata Airport is an alternative  gateway to the mesmerizing Peloponnese region. With daily direct flights from the major European hubs throughout the summer season, getting here is a breeze. If you’re traveling from the US, fear not. You can fly directly to Athens and then have a quick hop over to Kalamata. And if you prefer a scenic journey, why not hop on the express bus service from Athens to Kalamata?
