Trip overview

Ridomo Gorge walls within arm's reach, 8 km of Navarino Bay by kayak, Neda waterfalls on a rope.

This is a private week of guided sport in the southern Peloponnese, starting and ending at Athens or Kalamata airport, with private transfers and English-speaking guides from Kalamata on every activity day. A gorge below Taygetos, a kayak crossing of Navarino Bay, a ride through orange groves, a paddleboard along the Kardamyli coast and a canyon in the Neda all start from one waterfront hotel. Kalamata beats a coastal village as the base for an active group, because the mountain, the bay and the canyon are each a day trip from the same room.

Skill comes before the canyon. Ridomo is first: 8 km on foot with boulder scrambling, so legs and balance are tested on dry rock. Two water days follow, split by a morning on the bike with a market stop and a tzatziki lesson. The Neda comes on day six, after two days on the water, when the slides and abseils feel like the next step rather than the first.

Each activity runs about four hours. Fitness is moderate and every skill is taught. The longest drive is on the Neda day and, for anyone flying through Athens, on the first and last days. We run it April to June and September to October.

“In the narrow stretch of the Ridomo you can touch both walls at the same time. That is the sentence the brochure should have led with.”Fotis Kontargiris - Head guide
Why this trip

Five activity days from one waterfront hotel

Ridomo Gorge below Taygetos

An 8 km hike from Vorio with boulder scrambling and a picnic in the gorge, ending in a corridor so narrow you can touch both walls at once.

Kayaking to Sphacteria island

About four hours from Pylos across Navarino Bay, into sea caves and out to Sphacteria, with cliff jumps for anyone who wants them and a beach afternoon after.

Sea caves by paddleboard

A 4 km stand-up paddle along the Kardamyli coast, through coves and caves where sea turtles sometimes surface, then a picnic on the beach.

Canyon slides in the Neda

Three kilometres of canyon with a senior canyoning guide: natural slides, swims, jumps into pools and abseils down waterfalls, after a full safety briefing.

Orange groves by bike

A 20 km ride with only 100 m of climbing, stopping at the farmers' market for olives and oil, then a tzatziki lesson in a Kalamata kitchen.

Picnics packed by your guide

Five lunches carried to the gorge, the beach or the riverbank: bread, cheeses, vegetables, dips and seasonal fruit, changed a little each day.

Airport pickup, welcome dinner in Kalamata

Athens Airport or Kalamata Airport → Kalamata

Our guide meets you at Athens or Kalamata airport and drives you to the hotel on the Kalamata beachfront. From Athens it is the longest road of the week; from Kalamata airport it is a short hop.

Afternoon is free for unpacking and a first swim off the town beach. In the evening the group meets for the welcome dinner at a taverna in Kalamata, where the guide runs the trip briefing: the order of the days, the kit for each sport and the start times for the week. Tell the guide tonight about any vegetarian, vegan or other dietary needs, so the picnics are right from day two.

Ridomo Gorge on foot from Vorio

Kalamata → Vorio → Ridomo Gorge → Kalamata

From Kalamata the transfer runs to Vorio, a village at the foot of Taygetos, where the hike starts. Our guide leads about four hours and 8 km through Ridomo Gorge, with 446 m of ascent and 466 m of descent, and boulder scrambling where the path gives out. Near the end the walls close to a corridor narrow enough to touch both sides, the rock cool under the palm. Lunch is a picnic in the gorge, and the evening in Kalamata is free, with the guide’s suggestions for dinner. Wear boots or trail shoes with grip: the boulders are polished.

Kayaks from Pylos to Sphacteria

Kalamata → Pylos → Navarino Bay → Sphacteria → Pylos → Kalamata

Kayaks launch from Pylos after the drive west from Kalamata, and the guide leads about four hours and 8 km across Navarino Bay. The route takes in sea caves and crosses to Sphacteria, the long island closing the bay where the Battle of Navarino was fought in 1827. Cliff jumps are there for anyone who wants them; nobody has to. Lunch is a picnic, the afternoon goes to a beach on the bay, and the transfer brings the group back to Kalamata for a free evening. Bring swim kit, a hat and high-factor sun cream: there is little shade on the water.

Orange groves, market and a tzatziki lesson

Kalamata

In the morning the bikes leave from the hotel for a 20 km ride through the orange groves around Kalamata, with only 100 m of climbing. Stops come at small shops and at the farmers’ market, where olives and oil are sold by the stallholders who grow them, and at a kafenio (coffee house) for a Greek coffee. Afterwards a woman from Kalamata shows the group how she makes tzatziki, from straining the yoghurt to grating the cucumber. Lunch is included, and the evening is free. Bring a small bag for anything you buy at the market.

Paddleboards along the Kardamyli coast

Kalamata → Kardamyli → Kalamata

Kardamyli, on the Messinian Gulf below Taygetos, is the start for a stand-up paddle of about four hours and 4 km. Our guide teaches the stance on the beach first, then leads the group along the coast into coves and sea caves. Sea turtles surface here on some mornings, though a sighting is never certain. Cliff jumps are offered for those who want them, and lunch is a picnic on the beach before the transfer back to Kalamata and a free evening. If the wind is up and the sea is not safe for boards, the guide swaps the paddle for a hike.

Neda canyon, then the farewell dinner

Kalamata → Neda Gorge → Kalamata

Fotis Kontargiris, our senior canyoning guide, starts the day with a safety briefing at the Neda, after the longest drive of the week from Kalamata. The canyon section is about 3 km and four hours: natural slides, swims, scrambles, jumps into pools and abseils down waterfalls, with all canyoning gear provided. Lunch is a picnic by the river. Back in Kalamata, the farewell dinner is at the guides’ favourite restaurant in town. Pack a dry change of clothes for the vehicle: the drive home is easier out of a wet canyon kit.

Breakfast and the road to the airport

Kalamata → Athens Airport or Kalamata Airport

Early light on the Kalamata front is the last thing on the plan before breakfast at the hotel: yoghurt, honey, eggs and olives. Our guide then drives the group to Athens or Kalamata airport. For an Athens flight this is a long road day, so tell us your flight time when you book and we set the departure from the hotel around it. Kalamata airport is the short transfer. Pack the wet kit the night before and keep a bag for damp shoes.

Stay & eat

Six nights’ hotel

WhenWhereMeals included
Day 1Hotel — Twin ShareDinner
Day 2-6Hotel — Twin ShareBreakfast, Picnic Lunch, Dinner
Day 7Hotel — Twin ShareBreakfast

All six nights are in one 4-star hotel on the Kalamata waterfront, with twin-share rooms and an ensuite bathroom in each.

One base is the point of the format. You unpack once, wet kit has a whole evening to dry, and every transfer to Vorio, Pylos, Kardamyli and the Neda leaves from the same door. The beach is across the promenade, so a swim before dinner needs no planning. On the free evenings the town is yours: our guides suggest tavernas and book a table if you ask in the morning.

A single room is available at a supplement, quoted on request. If two of you want separate rooms, tell us when you enquire so we can hold them for all six nights.

On the table

Delicious local meals

The welcome dinner is at a taverna in Kalamata on day 1, with the trip briefing at the table. The farewell, on day 6, is at the guides’ favourite restaurant in town.

Breakfast at the hotel includes Greek yoghurt, honey, eggs, olives and glyko tou koutaliou (spoon sweet, here preserved orange peel). On activity days lunch is a picnic the guide carries in: bread, cheeses, vegetables, dips and seasonal fruit. Day 4 adds a tzatziki lesson after the market.

The other four evenings are free, and the guides name tavernas along each route. Vegetarian, vegan and special diets are catered for with advance notice. The picnic in Ridomo Gorge beats any table in town.

Breakfast
Breakfast at the Kalamata hotel every morning: Greek yoghurt, honey, orange-peel spoon sweets, eggs and olives.
Lunch
Lunch on activity days is a picnic your guide brings and changes each day: bread, cheeses, vegetables, dips and seasonal fruit.
Dinner
Dinner is on your own apart from the welcome taverna on day 1 and the farewell on day 6; your guide recommends tavernas along each route.

What moves and what stays fixed

Tell us the group’s ages and experience and we set the pace of each day with the guides: more time on the beach after the kayak, a longer teaching session before the paddleboards, a single room for anyone who wants one. Your dates can fall anywhere from April to June or September to October.

What we will not change is the single base or the order of the days. The canyon comes last because the paddling days come first, and that is the right way round.
