Trip overview

Agiorgitiko in Nemea, Malvasia at Monemvasia, syglino in Areopoli and Fileri from 1948 vines.

Ten days, private, from Athens back to Athens through Nemea, the Argolida, the Arcadian mountains, Laconia, the Mani and Messinia. You travel by private vehicle with our team, with licensed guides at three sites. Take the six-day food and wine first; this one is for travellers who came home asking about Kydonitsa, Mavroudi and Fileri.

Each region is met through one wine and one larder, north to south: Agiorgitiko in Nemea, Moschofilero on the Mantineia plateau, Malvasia at Monemvasia, Fileri near Ancient Messene. Most producers are met at lunch, which is why every lunch is included. Three moments set the pace. Currants hang on wires at Golden Black in late summer, the rock at Monemvasia stands empty at first light, and a Kalamata market morning comes before the road home.

The grading is gentle, and every walk is short and on request. Days five and eight are the long ones, each over three hours on the road in two legs. We run it April to November, with departures on Monday or Thursday so that no winery or market falls on its closing day. Choose October over May: Feneos beans, the Moschofilero harvest and Kastanitsa chestnuts all land in the same weeks.

“The table sets the route, and each region is met through one wine and one larder.”Fotis Kontargiris, planning note
Why this trip

One wine and one larder for each region

Agiorgitiko from three heights

At Aivalis in Nemea the same red grape is poured from three vineyards at different altitudes, side by side, so the difference in the glass is plain to taste.

Mycenae read through its spice tablets

A licensed guide walks the citadel using the House of the Sphinxes tablets, which list the spices the palace stored. It is a kitchen ledger more than 3,000 years old.

Pink Moschofilero, 100 days on skins

Troupis makes Ekato, a rosé from a white grape left 100 days on its skins, grown among the walls of ancient Mantineia on the Arcadian plateau.

Fir honey and sheep's yoghurt in Vytina

Mainalo fir honey has carried a protected name since 1994 and does not crystallise. In Vytina it comes with Tsatsoulis feta and sheep's yoghurt.

Malvasia where malmsey began

Giorgos and Elli Tsimbidis pour six wines at Monemvasia Winery in Velies with Laconian products, ending on Malvasia, the wine English merchants called malmsey.

Nestor's wine magazine at Pylos

The Palace of Nestor kept sealed wine jars, a pantry of 2,853 cups and records of perfumed oil. A licensed guide reads the storerooms with you.

The route

From Nemea's cellars to the Kalamata market

Day by day

Ten days built around lunch

Two nights each in Nafplio, at Manna and at Kinsterna, then three in Kalamata to finish.

Arrival

Arrive

Nemea's cellars on the way to Nafplio

Athens → Nemea → Nafplio

Our driver collects you in Athens in the morning, and Nemea is about 90 minutes away. At Aivalis the Agiorgitiko comes from three vineyards at different heights, poured side by side. From August to October, currants dry on wires at Golden Black, and you hang a few bunches yourself.

Lunch is among the vines, with Feneos beans or grass-pea fava. In the evening the welcome dinner is in Nafplio, the first of three hosted dinners. Keep a light layer in your hand luggage, because the cellar runs cooler than the vineyard.

Mycenae's spice ledger, red shrimp at Koilada

Nafplio → Mycenae → Koilada → Franchthi Cave → Nafplio

A licensed guide reads Mycenae through the House of the Sphinxes tablets, the palace’s list of stored spices. The road then runs south to Koilada for a lunch of red shrimp. At Franchthi Cave, fish bones from about 10,000 years ago include tuna. Karonis has been distilling since 1869, and its sour-cherry liqueur is the pour. The evening is free. Wear shoes with grip for the citadel stone and the cave path. On request, we swap the day for the Tsakonian coast.

Day 3
03

Moschofilero among the walls of Mantineia

Nafplio → Mantinia → Rizes (on request) → Magouliana

About an hour of road brings you up to the Mantineia plateau, where Moschofilero grows inside the line of the ancient city walls. At Troupis the Ekato rosé spends 100 days on its skins, which turns a white grape pink. On request, we add Tselepos at Rizes for the Amalia Brut and the Kolliniatiko. Lunch is on the plateau. The night is at Manna in Magouliana, a 1920s sanatorium at 1,200 m, and the evening is free. Pack a warm layer for the altitude.

Day 4
04

Vytina dairy, fir honey and Dimitsana

Magouliana → Vytina → Magouliana → Dimitsana → Stemnitsa

Vytina is the dairy stop on Mainalo. Tsatsoulis makes sheep’s yoghurt and feta, and Liaropoulos makes egg pasta and soured-wheat soup. Mainalo fir honey has carried a protected name since 1994 and does not crystallise. Lunch is back at Iosif taverna in Magouliana. In the afternoon, the Open-Air Water Power Museum in Dimitsana shows a grape-spirit still at work. Coffee follows at the Gerousia kafeneio in Stemnitsa, open since 1870. The evening is free. Leave room in your luggage for honey, because it packs well.

Day 5
05

Kydonitsa on the Sparta plain

Magouliana → Tripoli → Sparta → Theodorakakos Estate → Monemvasia

Two legs of road, over three hours in all, carry the day from Arcadia past Tripoli and Sparta to Laconia. It is the longest drive so far. In between, Theodorakakos, organic since 1996, pours its Kydonitsa and Mavroudi. In September the estate closes, and a licensed guide takes you round Mystras instead; in other months Mystras is on request. Lunch is on the plain, and the evening at Kinsterna is free. If you add Mystras, wear shoes with grip for the steep stone lanes.

Full dayDuration
Overnight in Kinsterna, Monemvasia
Day 6
06

Malvasia and the rock at first light

Monemvasia → Velies → Monemvasia

First light is the hour for the rock, with the lanes inside the walls still empty. Later, at Monemvasia Winery in Velies, Giorgos and Elli Tsimbidis pour six wines with Laconian products. The last of them is Malvasia, the wine English merchants knew as malmsey. After lunch the afternoon is free for a swim off the rocks. In the evening, the hosted dinner at Kinsterna comes with the estate’s own wines. Pack swim kit and sandals, because there is no sand here.

Overnight in Kinsterna, Monemvasia
Day 7
07

Gythio sesame bars, Areopoli smoked pork

Monemvasia → Gytheio → Areopoli → Kardamyli → Kalamata

Gythio comes first. Manolakos has made sesame and honey bars here since 1902, and in summer octopus may be drying by the harbour, though not every day. In Areopoli, Milia’s bakery fries lalangia, ribbons of dough. Lunch is syglino, the Mani’s smoked pork, scrambled with eggs and tomato at Alepi or Palaiopolis. On request, we walk to the Tigani salt hollows from Mezapos, about an hour each way. Skip that walk in high summer, because there is no shade. Then the coast road runs north through Kardamyli to Kalamata. The evening is free.

Day 8
08

Nestor's storerooms and the Gialova lagoon

Kalamata → Chora (Palace of Nestor) → Pyrgos → Gialova → Kalamata

A licensed guide takes you through the Palace of Nestor at Chora: the wine magazine with its sealed jars, a pantry of 2,853 cups, and tablets recording perfumed oil. Nestor Wines at Pyrgos is the afternoon tasting. Lunch is in Gialova, beside a lagoon that was once a fishpond. This is a long road day, over three hours in two legs. The evening is free. Tell us at breakfast if you want a table booked tonight.

Day 9
09

Ancient Messene and Fileri from 1948 vines

Kalamata → Ancient Messene → Vasilada → Kitries

Ancient Messene is the morning, with a licensed guide. Pausanias names Mount Eva above it, after the cry evoi. Fifteen minutes on, in Vasilada, Kostas Psaroulis grows Fileri from vines planted in 1948, along with ungrafted Assyrtiko on an old lake bed full of shells. Lunch is at Petalidi, with the fishermen who own the table. The farewell dinner is tonight. Wine packs easily for the flight home, but check the rules before you buy cheese or cured meat.

Depart

Kalamata market morning, then Athens

Kalamata market → Callicounis → Athens

Market morning in Kalamata falls on a Wednesday or a Saturday, which is why departures run on Mondays and Thursdays. The stalls sell Alagonia potatoes, Taygetos oregano and honey. At Diakoumis you taste sfela, the brined Messinian cheese, and Oikonomakos, butchers since 1874, cut the cured pork. Callicounis has distilled since 1850 and makes the Ouzo of Kalamata. After an early lunch in the market quarter, the motorway takes you back to Athens. Tell us your flight time and we set the hour we leave.

Nafplio, two nights: a hotel in the town, confirmed with your booking. It is a short drive to Mycenae and Koilada.

Manna, two nights: a 1920s sanatorium at 1,200 m in Magouliana, now a hotel. Arcadian fir forest is all around, and the evenings are cool even in summer.

Kinsterna, two nights: an estate hotel near Monemvasia that makes its own wines, which are poured at the day 6 hosted dinner. It puts you close to the rock for first light.

Kalamata, three nights: a hotel in the city, confirmed with your booking. It is a short drive to the market on the last morning.

On the table

Lunch with the producers, three dinners hosted

Most producers are met at lunch, so every lunch is included. Three dinners are hosted: the welcome in Nafplio on day 1, Kinsterna with its estate wines on day 6, and the farewell on day 9.

Syglino is the Mani’s smoked pork, kept in its own fat. It has no protected name, and packs labelled Syglino Manis may come from Chalkidiki, so we eat it in Areopoli. Sfela, the brined Messinian cheese with a protected name since 1996, comes with lalangia in Kalamata.

Olive oil is on every table, and we treat it as a local cultivar rather than the headline. On free evenings we book a table for you. Vegetarian and other needs are handled table by table, with notice.

Lunch

Lunch
Syglino scrambled with eggs and tomato at Alepi or Palaiopolis in Areopoli on day 7.

Swaps we make, and the days we hold

The plan can be tailored. On request, we add Mystras on day 5, the National Archaeological Museum before your flight, or the Tsakonian coast in place of day 2. In harvest season, and only on request, we add an olive press.

The departure days stay fixed on Monday or Thursday. Monemvasia Winery is closed on Sundays and Mondays, and the Kalamata market runs on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Move the start and the trip loses its best tables, so we would rather move the dates than the days.
