The ride at a glance
Climb into the fir shade above Stemnitsa on a pedal-assist bike, then coast down forest tracks to a picnic at Libovisi.
Stemnitsa sits at 1,080 metres on the western flank of Menalon, above the Lousios Gorge. It is a stone village of slate roofs and silversmiths — cooler than Kalamata by ten degrees in July, and quiet by the standards of anywhere on the coast. The fir forest starts within a kilometre of the plateia and climbs from there.
The route runs on a mix of paved mountain road and quiet forest track, mostly under canopy. You’ll pass shepherds moving flocks between summer pasture — the bells carry a long way in the thin air — and cross into the high meadow at Libovisi, a scatter of stone buildings on an exposed shoulder of the mountain. The e-bikes do the work of the climbing; you do the steering and the looking.
Skip this in a heatwave and take the gorge walk instead. Above 32 degrees the forest is still bearable but the meadow at Libovisi is fully exposed, and the picnic stops being a picnic.
How the morning unfolds
Exact times shift with the season; your guide will confirm when you book.
- 0110:00
Fit and brief at Stemnitsa Parking
Meet at the village parking above the plateia. Bike fit, helmet, a run-through of the pedal-assist settings, and a look at the route on the map.
- 0210:30
Climb into the fir forest
Roll out on paved road for the first kilometre, then peel off onto forest track. The canopy closes overhead within minutes and the temperature drops by several degrees.
- 0311:30
Cross the shepherds' ground
The track opens onto a stretch of upland pasture where flocks graze through the summer. Bells, pine scent, long views west toward the Lousios.
- 0412:30
Picnic at Libovisi
Stone buildings on an exposed shoulder of Menalon. Bread baked that morning, garden vegetables, local cheese, koroneiki oil, seasonal fruit. Long lunch, no hurry.
- 0513:30
Descent back to Stemnitsa
Mostly downhill through the same forest, different light. Back at the parking by early afternoon with time for a coffee in the plateia.

Practical questions
No. The pedal-assist handles the climbing — what you need is basic bike-handling confidence and average fitness. Minimum age is fourteen, and under-eighteens ride with a parent.
The forest canopy shelters most of the route, so light rain doesn’t stop us. Storms or high wind at elevation do — in which case we reschedule or refund in full.
Groups run from four to twelve. If fewer than four have booked forty-eight hours out we’ll offer you an alternative date or a full refund.
Bring your own — at least a litre and a half per person. There’s no reliable refill point between Stemnitsa and Libovisi.
Yes. Halfway through the paddle we land at a quiet beach for a picnic — freshly baked bread, organic vegetables and fruit from local gardens, our own olive oil, and Messinian cheese. It is a proper stop, not a snack on the kayak.
Swimwear under quick-dry shorts and a t-shirt is the basic kit. Add a hat, sunglasses with a retainer strap, and reef-safe sunscreen. Skip running shoes and socks — they get soggy and cold. Sea shoes, sport sandals, or flip-flops are right. In April and October, bring a thin fleece or synthetic base layer; the water is colder than it looks. We provide dry bags for phones and wallets.
Local paddlers certified by British Canoeing as Sea Kayak Leaders, all carrying current first-aid certificates. They grew up on this coast — they read the wind and the swell before they read the forecast, and they know which cove the seals use in May.
How we ride lightly
The e-bikes replace what would otherwise be a 4x4 shuttle up and down the mountain. Groups are capped at twelve so the forest tracks stay quiet. The picnic is sourced from producers within thirty kilometres of Stemnitsa — the cheese from a Menalon dairy, the oil from Messinia, the bread from the village.
